Medtronic seeks to expand use of CRT device

Medtronic is looking to open up a new market for its cardiac resychronization therapy (CRT), the company said Tuesday.

Currently, the company's CRT technology is approved for use in treating patients with advanced stages of heart failure. The company says it will seek FDA approval to use CRT to treat patients with early- or mild-stage heart disease.

One of the challenges with medical devices is finding the right patient. Implanting devices in patients who won't clearly benefit from them exposes the patient and health-care system to unnecessary costs and risks.

Medtronic says it has clinical study data that suggest patients with mild heart failure would benefit from CRT. The company's announcement comes as it anticipates results from a Canadian study evaluating the impact of CRT.
