An energy-conservation group honored 3M last week for a product that boosts LCD screen brightness without draining additional electricity.

The Alliance to Save Energy gave 3M’s Vikuiti film an “Innovative Star of Energy Efficiency” award. The product reduces the number of watts needed to power TVs and monitors by recycling light that’s typically lost.

“The company’s hard work and commitment to energy efficiency is evident in its [brightness-enhancing film] and serves as an important model for the electronics industry,” the alliance’s president said.

According to the company, the film increases overall energy efficiency of devices by as much as 32 percent and could help save more than 100 billion kilowatts of electricity in LCD TVs sold between 2006 and 2011.
