General Mills and the 'Netflix Index' as economic indicator

By Dan Haugen | Published Mon, Jan 5 2009 10:07 am

It's been widely reported that General Mills is enjoying a spike in sales as consumers cut back on restaurant spending and choose to eat-in instead.

The Golden Valley-based food company is among a small cluster of publicly traded companies the Oxford Club Investment U blog is dubbing the "Netflix Index."

Other companies that are benefiting from consumers' frugality include Kraft Foods, Wal-Mart and Dollar Tree.

"[I]t’s nice to know that some habits can be counted on," the Investment U blog says. "And who knows? Tomorrow you could be hearing about the 'Netflix Index' as the newest economic gauge."
