Andersen Corp. temporarily laid off another 150 production workers at its Bayport plant today, citing continued weakness in the housing market, the Stillwater Gazette reports today.
The paper says the announcement comes just two weeks after the window- and door-maker said it would permanently shed 50 positions and temporarily idle another 400 workers at its Bayport and Cottage Grove facilities. Two months ago, it laid off 52 in Menomonie, Wis.
"It was felt that because of market conditions, a larger layoff had to be made," Andersen spokeswoman Maureen McDonough told the RiverTown Newspaper Group.
The temporary layoffs, along with those announced Jan. 8, are expected to last through the end of the first quarter, but they could extend past that if market conditions don't improve, she said.
Andersen has about 11,000 employees, with about 5,000 in Minnesota. The permanent layoffs earlier this month were the first at the company in two years.
