    Mayo Clinic CEO to retire

    Mayo Clinic's national president and CEO, Dr. Denis Cortese, will retire in November, the Rochester Post Bulletin reports.

    In addition to running the heralded health-care enterprise,Cortese is known as an advocate for reforming the nation's health-care system, and he's been consulted on health reform by Congress and President Obama's administration.

    "Under his leadership, we have built our financial reserves and endowment in preparation for the financial challenges we are seeing today, and have begun a strategic transformation to best position us for the future," said James Barksdale, chair of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, who will lead a search committee to find a successor.

    Under Cortese, the Campaign for Mayo Clinic was begun in an effort to build a $1.25 billion endowment for research and education. He oversaw completion of two new hospitals, one at the Mayo campus in Phoenix and the other on the Jacksonville, Fla., campus.
