Recession, don't even try to stand in the way of America and its flat-screen TVs.
After news of Best Buy's better-than-expected performance this winter, BusinessWeek writes that American's definition of "necessities" might be changing to include such items as TVs and laptop computers.
"If your car died, you have to get a new car. If you're having a problem with your computer, you need to get another computer," a retail analyst tells the magazine.
Best Buy's fourth-quarter earnings report was enough to rally optimism for stocks across the board Thursday on Wall Street. As one trader told the Wall Street Journal:
"When ... Best Buy blows out earnings, even if a lot of it is lowered prices on things, the consumer is obviously not dead."
