    T.G.I. Friday's the latest chain to unveil recession pricing

    This recession has brought us $2 gasoline, $5 basketball seats, and $39 airline flights. Now, the $5 steak sandwich.

    USA Today reports that Carlson Companies' T.G.I. Friday's is the latest casual dining chain to unveil recession pricing. The company is debuting a new $5 sandwich and salad menu today.

    A researcher who tracks the industry says $5 is a magic number, but the newspaper asks whether Friday's can afford it? The steak sandwich, for example, would normally sell for $11.75.

    "The consumer needs something that gives them permission to experiment — and this is it," marketing chief Andrew Jordan said.
