Building owners are apparently willing to skimp on their cleaning budgets to save a few bucks in this economy.
Ecolab reported a big dip in profits for the first few months of 2009, with U.S. cleaning and sanitizing operations declining 5 percent to $623 million, according to the company's press release.
CEO Douglas Baker Jr. said the company "performed well in the face of a very difficult global economy."
Two areas that didn't see lower sales: Ecolab's food safety and health care businesses. The company also saw gains in Canada and Latin America, which helped offset other loses.
