    Ex-Target board member Bill George disputes investor's criticism

    Harvard Business School professor and former Target board member Bill George is coming to his former colleagues' defense.

    In a column on CNBC.com, George says  hedge-fund manager William Ackman is "attacking Target's three greatest strengths: governance, integrated merchandising and value creation."

    George, the former chairman and CEO of Medtronic, served as a Target board member from 1993 to 2005. He argues in his column that the Target board is independent, financially disciplined and committed to increasing shareholder value.

    "Ackman has picked an odd target in attempting to replace the Target board," George writes. "It is one of the strongest, most committed boards in the country."
