Geek Squad says 104-year-old tweeter is for real

By Dan Haugen | Published Thu, May 21 2009 1:00 pm

That tweeting 104-year-old -- she's for real, says the Geek Squad.

The Geek Squad is responding to the disbelief and accusations whirling online about a centenarian it set up on Twitter last week.

A TechCrunch writer accused the Geek Squad of cynically taking advantage of Ivy Bean for PR purposes and questioned whether a 104-year-old would actually type messages such as "Come and follow my feed."

Colin Burns, writing on the Geek Squad's blog, says Ivy Bean is indeed writing her own tweets.

"All of Ivy's tweets are her own. We may have given her a primer on the lingo, but everything she writes is her own."

The Geek Squad never hid its involvement, Burns writes, and it's checked with her residence to ensure she's not being overrun by media attention. She's not, they said. She does, however, have a flood of followers -- 14,000 and counting.
