Target director has been criticized, lampooned down under

By Dan Haugen | Published Fri, May 22 2009 10:48 am

A shareholder group placed a bull's-eye today on the back of Target director Solomon Trujillo.

It isn't the first time Trujillo's been the target of criticism.

The Australian telecommunications executive, who has served on Target's board of directors for 15 years, recently was asked to resign as CEO of Telstra. The terms of his departure there suggest it's time for him to give up his seat on Target's board, too, says a shareholder group led by hedge-fund manager William Ackman.

In his home country, Trujillo sounds about as popular as bank executives are here these days. Trujillo's Wikipedia entry has been on lock-down since last summer, according to Australian computer magazine APC. That's when Trujillo's attorneys wrote a threatening letter to the site accusing it of allowing libellous comment about him by anonymous commenters.

Austrailian IT reported on Trujillo's exit from Telstra last week, calling it "rather undignified" and said he leaves behind a legacy of deflated share prices and disgruntled investors and customers.

Trujillo was even the subject of a parody by Aussie comedy troupe The Chaser, which lampoons him as an aloof and greedy corporate exec. (Warning: The video, above, contains some potentially offensive language. If you're at work you might want to plug in your headphones or at least lower the volume.)
