Medtronic paid military doctor $800,000 over eight years

By Dan Haugen | Published Thu, Jun 18 2009 10:08 am

Medtronic is finally disclosing that it paid nearly $800,000 to a former military surgeon who is accused of falsifying data in a study of the company's Infuse bone-growth product.

Questions about Medtronic's ties to Dr. Timothy Kuklo have dogged the company for weeks since the New York Times first broke the story early last month. The commander at Walter Reed Army Medical Center told the newspaper Kuklo made up patient data for the study.

The study was conducted between March 2003 and March 2005 and purported to show unusually high success rates for Infuse when used to treat wounded soldiers' shattered legs.

The Times reports today that Medtronic paid Kuklo $788,280 in consulting, speaking, travel and other fees between 2001 and 2009. Medtronic denies any involvement with the study.

The act of transparency takes some pressure of the medical device company, but it is still under investigation by the Justice Department and Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, on suspicion that it may have illegally marketed Infuse for non-approved uses.
