Medtronic disclosed on Tuesday that it's been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors for documents related to Dr. Timothy Kuklo, the former military surgeon accused of fabricating study results.

The company's disclosure was contained in a regular quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It doesn't name Kuklo, but the Star Tribune safely links the feds' request to the doctor, who led a study of Medtronic's Infuse bone-growth product while at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

A Medtronic spokeswoman, however, would not confirm for the newspaper that the subpoena was about Dr. Kuklo. Medtronic recently admitted it paid the doctor nearly $800,000 between 2001 and 2008.  The suspect study was conducted between 2003 and 2005. A supervisor later accused Kuklo of fraud.

Here is the statement in Medtronic's report:

"On May 21, 2009, the Company received a subpoena from the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts pursuant to the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 seeking documents related to a study published in the British volume of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, and contracts, research grants, speaking and education programs, and payments for certain named physicians. The Company will comply, as required, with the terms of the subpoena."
