A UnitedHealth Group subsidiary is being grilled again, this time by Congress, for an allegedly faulty database that's driven up the cost of health care for patients.
The database, by Ingenix, has been used by two-thirds of the nation's health insurance industry to set out-of-network reimbursement rates. Investigators allege that Ingenix skewed the data to deliberately underpay doctors, leaving patients to pick up the difference.
The UnitedHealth company previously agreed to pay $350 million to settle allegations from New York's attorney general. It also said it would shut down the database and start from scratch with a new system.
A company spokesman brushed off the new criticism, telling Minnesota Public Radio that it stands by the data and that Congress' report contains little information that wasn't already widely known.
