HealthPartners says the nation could save trillions if other health-care organizations were only half as great as its system is.

President Obama recently asked health-care groups to identify at least $2 trillion in potential cost savings over the next decades. A HealthPartners study analysis announced today says we could save $2.4 trillion if others simply did what HealthPartners is already doing.

“If the rest of the nation achieved even half of what we have achieved through care system redesign, healthcare in America would be more effective and more affordable,” medical director Dr. Brian Rank said in the company's statement. “We can revolutionize care on a national basis, by simply doing the things that are already proven to work.”

The company said the use of electronic medical records to assist doctors and nurses has increased the percentage of patients receiving "optimal" care for diabetes and heart disease. It also claims "perfect" heart attack care and say the efforts have reduced emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
