Whistleblower accuses medical device firms of fraud

By Dan Haugen | Published Wed, Jul 15 2009 3:35 pm

A set of newly unsealed whistleblower lawsuits accuses Medtronic, St. Jude Medical, Boston Scientific and four other companies of offering illegal kickbacks to doctors, the Pioneer Press and Boston Globe report.

The incentives were part of a nationwide campaign to encourage "off-label" or unapproved use the companies' surgical ablation devices, according to the lawsuits, which were filed in 2007 and 2008 by a former Boston Scientific employee.

The Pioneer Press received brief comments from two of the companies involved. Medtronic said it will argue its position in court, and a St. Jude Medical spokeswoman said the company will continue to cooperate and "vigorously defend itself."
