Best Buy, Wal-Mart maneuver for laptop sales

By Dan Haugen | Published Thu, Jul 23 2009 10:02 am

A laptop war is brewing between Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart has renovated PC displays in 1,200 of its 3,600 stores, USA Today reports, and on Sunday the mega-retailer will begin selling some fairly well-equipped laptops for under $300.

Meanwhile, Best Buy Wednesday announced an exclusive line of New Next Class personal laptops. The four computers were made in partnership with HP, Toshiba, Sony and Dell and based on input the retailer solicited from college students.

Best Buy says it worked with students to identify the most important features for a laptop: long battery life, low weight, affordability and fully loaded  features (including virus protection).

Laptop computers are an increasingly important product for retailers. Desktop PC sales are in decline, falling by nearly a quarter in the past year, according to one report. Meanwhile, laptop sales are up 10 percent during the same period.

So, who's going to come out on top? Will Wal-Mart be able to compete with Best Buy's service? Will Best Buy be able to (or will it try to) match Wal-Mart on prices? Any thoughts?
