    Anytime Fitness looking to expand into Mexico

    Anytime Fitness, a health club chain based in Minnesota, has signed an agreement with an entrepreneur who wants to open 100 clubs in Mexico.

    Anytime, which has 1,200 clubs in the United States, Australia and New Zealand that are open 24-7, has its home office in Hastings.

    Rodrigo Chavez, who owns one Anytime Fitness franchise in Texas, wants to open clubs near popular Mexican resort areas, but not for tourists. He's targeting the resort workers.

    “There aren’t many good fitness options for most people who live in Mexico,” Chavez said.

    He also thinks that other entrepreneurs, visiting the resorts, will see the concept and want to open the clubs in their home areas.

    Chavez says he’ll open the first Anytime Fitness club in Mexico within the next six months. His goal is to open five clubs within a year, 50 clubs within three years and more than 100 clubs by 2014.

    “We are thrilled about Mr. Chavez’s plans for Mexico,” said John Kersh, Anytime Fitness vice president of international development.
