Wells Fargo wins fight for Wachovia; also: Target.com sees fewer clicks, and Imation hurt by IT spending cuts

Citigroup tells Wells Fargo: Fine, you can can have Wachovia. We don't even want it anymore. But we'll see you in court anyway. Citigroup's bid to buy part of the struggling Wachovia bank last week was disrupted when Wells Fargo announced it would buy all of Wachovia for $15 billion. The government tried unsuccessfully to broker a deal that would make everyone happy. Now, Citigroup says it won't try to block the deal, but it will go forward with a lawsuit seeking $60 billion in damages from Wachovia and Wells Fargo.

As the nation contemplates images of Depression-era soup lines, the soup war between Campbell's and General Mills is heating up. General Mills said Wednesday that it's removing MSG from all its Progresso brand soups, and it dared Campbell's to do the same. The announcement was in response to an ad campaign by Campbell's that a Progresso spokesman called "quite disingenuous."

The IRS says Medtronic used a Swiss subsidiary to improperly avoid paying certain taxes a decade ago. And now it wants the Fridley-based medical device maker to pay up to the tune of $53.6 million, MarketWatch reports. Medtronic disputes the bill and has requested a trial in U.S. Tax Court. The company says the IRS decision is based on rules that didn't exist before 2005, nine years after it arranged the tax setup with the help of an outside economist. Technology companies often use similar methods overseas. Both Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama have suggested they'll crack down on the practice.

My hair is getting a little shaggy these days, and I'm not alone -- if Regis Corp.'s latest revenue report is any indicator. The Edina-based hair care giant didn't make as much money as it thought it would during the three months ending Sept. 30. Consumers "are cutting back and, as a result, we are seeing a slow-down in spending and visitation patterns,” CEO Paul Finkelstein said in a statement. Regis still made $680 million, 2 percent more than the same period last year.

Sun Country Airlines has filed for bankruptcy. The Mendota Heights-based airline said this afternoon that it's filed for protection under Chapter 11. However, it also said it will continue operating and flying its regular flight schedule. CEO Stan Gadek said the bankruptcy filing is a result of recent events at its parent company, Petters Group Worldwide. Sun Country was planning to seek a loan from Petters Group, but last week owner Tom Petters was arrested and charged with fraud.

The credit crunch is making it difficult for some consumers to finance big-ticket items, like frozen peas. In Springfield, at least. Last night's episode of "The Simpsons" features Minnesota's own Jolly Green Giant and his pal Sprout as good cop-bad cop collection agents. They want Marge Simpson to pay up on the frozen peas she bought on an installment plan. Watch the clip below:

The next stage for Wells Fargo? Taking over a troubled competitor and surging overnight to become one of the nation's largest financial institutions. Wells Fargo will pay $15.4 billion for Wachovia, which was on the brink of being sold to Citigroup in a government-assisted deal. In a surprise announcement early this morning, Wells Fargo and Wachovia said they've agreed on a merger that does not involve any government funds. The combined bank will hold about $1.4 trillion in assets.

Did Buffett block Wells Fargo deal?; also: Target adds designer labels and dispatches toy-price spies, and Southwest landing at MSP

Did Warren Buffett nix the Wells Fargo-Wachovia deal? He owns 9 percent of Wells Fargo, which was reportedly close to acquiring Wachovia last week. The bank's chairman Dick Kovacevich backed out, blaming weaknesses in Wachovia's loan portfolio and said repeatedly: "It's not my call, it's our loan people." Portfolio magazine's Felix Salmon says it's almost unthinkable that Kovacevich, "a real buck-stops-here kind of guy," wasn't actually talking about Buffett, his largest and most loyal shareholder.

A rough week for Boston Scientific, the Wall Street Journal's Health Blog notes: A judge ordered the company to pay $703 million to archrival Johnson & Johnson to settle an 11-year-old lawsuit over a product it stopped selling four years ago. The case accused Boston Scientific and Medtronic of infringing on a patent for a bare-metal stent. Medtronic, which still sells stents, was ordered to pay $521 million.

Wells Fargo just missed a shot at becoming one of the nation's three largest banks. The Star Tribune reports that Wells Fargo, one of Minnesota's largest employers, was on the brink of closing a deal Sunday to buy Wachovia Corp., the nation's fourth-largest bank. It's not exactly clear how the deal came apart in the eleventh hour, but an aggressive Citigroup swooped in to buy the bank instead.
