Senate, House committees take up 2010 budget

By Cynthia Dizikes | Published Wed, Mar 25 2009 1:35 pm

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The House and Senate Budget committees will be wrangling today and tomorrow over the budget for fiscal year 2010.

Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., the only Minnesota representative on the House Budget Committee, got things started today by addressing the education provisions in the budget.

“Today, we will be put the test because our country is in crisis and it is time for action, reform, and reinvestment, not obstructionism,” McCollum said in a prepared opening statement.

McCollum said that she strongly supported the budget resolution, which basically keeps intact President Obama’s priorities on health care, energy and education if they do not increase the deficit.

Unlike the Senate, however, the House is proposing to use a legislative process known as “reconciliation” that would allow Obama’s health-care and education plans to move through the Senate without the threat of filibuster.

“There is not one child in this room today and yet the future for America’s children will be decided by our actions on this budget,” said McCollum.

Later today McCollum will argue against Republican-proposed amendments on the budget’s education measures. Stay tuned.
