    Ellison gets award for renter-protection legislation

    WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., won the second annual Bruce F. Vento Award last night for his work to pass renter-protection legislation.

    Vento, a Democrat, served as the congressman from Minneapolis for more than 20 years. He died of mesothelioma while in Congress and was succeeded by Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn.

    Earlier this year, Ellison sponsored renter-protection legislation that requires landlords facing foreclosure to give their renters a 90-day notice before eviction. The measure also allows renters to stay in their residences through the terms of their leases in certain cases.

    That legislation was signed into law ins May.

    Last year, the award was given to Rep. Judy Biggert, R-Ill.
