    More funds for dairy farmers added to ag legislation

    WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Additional money for the nation’s dairy farmers has been included in a Senate-House Conference Committee version of the FY2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, according to Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

    The measure would provide the U.S. Department of Agriculture with $350 million to help dairy farmers. Of that sum, $60 million would be used to increase the level at which the government buys surplus dairy products off of the market.

    “Minnesota’s farmers are at the heart of our agriculture industry,” Klobuchar said in a statement.  “The dairy farmers I’ve met with around the state are bearing the brunt of market forces beyond their control.  We must continue to fight for Minnesota’s farmers during these difficult times.”
