WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., requested an investigation on Tuesday into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Minnesota woman and two others in a “spiritual warrior” incident in Arizona earlier this month.

Citing news reports, Klobuchar said that approximately 60 people paid thousands of dollars each to be part of the  five-day motivational run by James Arthur Ray. After 36 hours of fasting, the people were crowded into a small enclosure covered with blankets and plastic tarps.

Klobuchar, who sits on both the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees, is asking that the U.S Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission look into the “program to determine whether any federal laws were violated” and “to take a close look at the marketing and advertising.”

“People came from all parts of the country to attend an event which they believed would enhance their lives,” Klobuchar said in a statement.  “Instead, three people died, 18 were hospitalized and dozens more were traumatized.  Mr. Ray neither enhanced their lives nor protected their safety.”
