    NFL asks Congress to prevent state court challenges like Vikings' case

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell called on Congress today to protect collective bargaining agreements from state law challenges, like the one that prevented the NFL from suspending Vikings’ defensive tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams after they tested positive for banned substances.

    “First, these state law attacks on the collectively-bargained [NFL] Policy jeopardize public confidence in the integrity and competitive equality of the game, which is critical to the success of the NFL, as it would be to every other professional sports league,” Goodell said today in prepared testimony before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing.

    Goodell added that the football league believes “that a specific and tailored amendment to the Labor Management Relations Act is appropriate and necessary to protect collectively-bargained steroid policies from attack under state law.”
