    Klobuchar, Franken choice for U.S. district court judge advances

    WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee today unanimously recommended Judge Susan Richard Nelson to be a U.S. district court judge in Minnesota. 

    Nelson was approved on a voice vote and now must be confirmed by the Senate.

    “She has been described as a judge who favors no defendants, no plaintiffs,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar. “Nelson has the integrity, intellect, and temperament to be an excellent federal judge.”

    Klobuchar recommended Nelson for the position in November, 2009, and she was nominated by President Obama in April. 

    Sen. Al Franken is also a Nelson supporter. When she was nominated, Franken said, “[T]he president has made an outstanding pick.”

    Nelson, currently a U.S. magistrate in Minnesota, received the highest rating — “Unanimously Well Qualified” — from the American Bar Association for the district court position. Before serving on the bench, Nelson was a trial lawyer at firms in Pittsburgh and New Haven, Conn.

    There has been speculation that Nelson may be considered in the future for a spot on the 8th Circuit of the Court of Appeals, which includes Minnesota. The 8th Circuit has one female judge, Diana Murphy, who previously was U.S. district court judge in Minnesota.
