And, speaking of possible 2012 U.S. Senate retirements...

...which, forgive me, I can't seem to stop doing at the moment, political reporter Jonathan Karl of ABC news has compiled his own list of the seven incumbents who are up in 2012 who are most likely to retire (not counting the three who have already stated that they will retire: Kent Conrad of N.D., Joe LIberman of CT, Kay Bailey Hutchison of TX).

Karl's list (which seem to be based largely on who is and isn't fund-raising, plus some political considerations and some of what Karl's sources tell him):
1. Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI)
2. Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA)
3. Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
4. Sen. John Ensign (R-NV)
5. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
6. Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE)
7. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI)

I don't have any insights into which of these might retire (although I'm skeptical on Kyl), but I do note that the list comprises five dems and only two repubs.

I thought Ensign had already indicated he planned to run again.

Eric -- I suspect the only reason Kyl would decline is to avoid a primary challenge from the even more rabid TPers in AZ -- although I can't imagine why he wouldn't be considered rabid enough.

And of course Ensign will run. Repubs have no shame!
