Bachmann's 'good news': End of the world is near

Rep. Michele Bachmann

Rep. Michele Bachmann: "Your listeners, U.S. taxpayers, are now paying to give arms to terrorists including Al Qaeda."

Perhaps U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann is feeling liberated by her decision not to seek reelection and no longer needs to worry — or to worry even less than she used to — about what she says.

But Bachmann really let fly recently with the joyous news that President Obama is now arming Al Qaida-linked terrorists and this is good news — in a certain kind of fundamentalist Christian meaning of "good news" that God's end days are upon us and the world as we have known it will soon be no more, but in a good way.

Long-time Bachmann watchers know that she has often used interviews with Christian radio stations to say things that can sound a little, um, strange to non-evangelical Christians. But this one is up there with some of her strangest.

First, a grain of truth. As part of the effort to beef up the forces that the U.S. supports in the Syrian civil war, Obama recently issued an order clearing the delivery of nonlethal aid, especially protective gear, that might help troops withstand a chemical-weapons attack. The aid is supposed to flow only to groups that have been "vetted," which I take to mean that the aid is supposed to flow to the least Islamist, least terrorism-tainted groups available in that horrible mess. And, as I mentioned, it's nonlethal defensive equipment.

But, speaking Saturday on a show called "Understanding the Times," Bachmann said: "Your listeners, U.S. taxpayers, are now paying to give arms to terrorists including Al Qaeda.” But rather than this being cause of concern, Bachmann said:

Now what this says to me, I’m a believer in Jesus Christ, as I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is on the fig tree and we are to understand the signs of the times, which is your ministry, we are to understand where we are in God’s end times history...Rather than seeing this as a negative, we need to rejoice, Maranatha Come Lord Jesus, His day is at hand...When we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this; these days would be as the days of Noah.

Right Wing Watch broke this story yesterday. Right Wing Watch also posted an audio clip, which is pasted below.

Rather than seeing this as a negative, we need to rejoice, Maranatha Come Lord Jesus, His day is at hand,” Bachmann continued. “When we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this; these days would be as the days of Noah - See more at: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/bachmann-obama-supporting-al-qaeda-proving-we-are-end-times#sthash.RJuiSqw1.dpuf

In an interview with Understanding the Times host Jan Markell on Saturday, Rep. Michele Bachmann accused President Obama of giving aid to Al Qaeda, which she said is proof that we are living in the Last Days. Of course, on the same day Bachmann gave the interview, a Delta Force operation approved by Obama nabbed a key Al Qaeda figure in Libya.

But according to Bachmann, Obama is now championing the terrorist group.

The Minnesota congresswoman referred to a decision by the Obama administration to allow vetted Syrian rebels not affiliated with terrorist organizations to help them resist chemical weapons attacks, which was spurred by the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons on civilians.

While the administration’s move is only related to non-lethal, defensive and protective aid, Bachmann falsely claimed that “President Obama waived a ban on selling arms to terrorists.”

“President Obama waived a ban on arming terrorists in order to allow weapons to go to the Syrian opposition,” Bachmann said. “Your listeners, US taxpayers, are now paying to give arms to terrorists including Al Qaeda.”

Bachmann said that the Al Qaeda funding (which isn’t happening) is a sign of the End Times: “This happened and as of today the United States is willingly, knowingly, intentionally sending arms to terrorists, now what this says to me, I’m a believer in Jesus Christ, as I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is on the fig tree and we are to understand the signs of the times, which is your ministry, we are to understand where we are in God’s end times history.”

“Rather than seeing this as a negative, we need to rejoice, Maranatha Come Lord Jesus, His day is at hand,” Bachmann continued. “When we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this; these days would be as the days of Noah.”

Once again…

"Strange" doesn't begin to even come close. These are the words of someone genuinely ignorant of the world around her. I can only assume her supporters at least sympathize with, if not match, her view of the world.

I do so look forward to the day when Mrs. Bachmann's "intellect" will no longer be a regular part of the public sphere, and will instead be limited to her disciples. The earth is not flat, disease is not caused by acquaintance, just because someone told you something doesn't mean it's true, pigs do not regularly fly, and so on.

And she wanted to have her

And she wanted to have her finger on the big red button?

The idea of "the end times are now" is based on hubris (all important things happen when I'm here), and sin ("taking the Lord's name in vain"--speaking for God when you know nothing of God's purpose or timing).

Pathetic.

Perhaps she could co-host a show with Pat Robertson.

Amazing in office

It is amazing somebody like this sits on the House Intelligence committee and has access to all kinds of classified information.

Michele

I have said this before and will say it again. She makes me ashamed to admit I am a Minnesotan every time she opens her mouth. She is representing us???

From her fix for the economy, of removeing the minimum wage to this. I will be glad when she is just a citizen again.

What's the matter, sir?

Don't you believe in democracy?

How does that post even

How does that post even remotely suggest that the person who wrote it doesn't believe in democracy?
Are you actually saying that being embarrassed by the delusional rantings of Bachmann is anti democratic?
I guess all of YOUR criticisms of Obama means you don't believe in democracy as well.

Democracy

includes the right to disagree with one's elected officials.
Don't you believe in it?

Also--
'The Good Lord must have loved dumb people; he made so many of them'.
--apocryphal

Oh I think Pat Robertson is more on top of it than

Representative Bachmann. I am in her district and I worry about my neighbors who helped elect her. Although her strongest supporter didn't have signs up for her last year. Apparently even they are sick of her.

More proof that

Bachmann lives on a different planet than the rest of us do.

Or

more proof that the people who elected her and continue to stand by her and simply ignore this "stuff"or actually believe this "stuff" live on a different plant than the rest of us do. That's the thing I just can't shake. This woman was actually reelected saying this kind of "stuff" and she still has a significant following. Chances are whoever replaces her will be somewhat as nutty - not as nutty - but still nutty

Depends on what you mean by 'significant' following

Clearly not enough voters to get her re-elected in a very safely conservative district, and clearly not enough to get her more than 2% of the Iowa straw poll.
At best she's leading a small tribe of lemmings.

Regarding Ms. Bachmann's "End Times"

(as I said elsewhere on this side) I can only assume Ms. Bachmann is expressing a deeply suppressed death wish, projecting it onto "god," and gleefully hoping for a sense of retribution when her "god" wipes out all humanity for not granting her the fame, fortune, and political power she deeply believes she deserves.

Luckily God is ignoring and will continue to completely ignore Michelle Bachmann's wishes in and hopes that the world should be destroyed because SHE feels disrespected, except, perhaps, for shaking God's head, and quietly saying, "Oh, Michelle."

It seems to me that it is the ultimate in selfishness to hope that God will destroy the world because YOU (and those like you) don't like the way things are going,...

and the height of denial regarding your own human limitations to believe that there is no way you could possibly be wrong,...

let alone consider that what's happening may be what God (who disagrees with each and every one of us about at least a few, and likely far more than a few things) has in mind.

Greg K, as kooky as MB is, I think you do her a disservice...

with your cartoonish characterization. Public life has been infected with all the people, like her, who back in the 70s were "Jesus People" and never grew out of it. They stake their lives and sanity in a literal, but somewhat selective, reading of the Bible. I've known several in my life and I believe in their sincerity as much as I believe they are deluded and wrong. Usually they stay to their churches and out of public life except for voting for people the rest of us think are nuts. To them her kookiest comments are like manna to the Israelites in the desert. I think part of her/their psychology is to be blind to their own hypocrasy and fallibility. I think she's been additionally twisted by having all the power and public exposure of her position, but her idea about the "end times" was formed 40 years ago when she was "born again".

I will miss having her around to mock and I think it is troublesome that enough people believed in her for her to get elected. I doubt they will elect anyone that votes much differently.

I'm Sorry

But did you actually disagree with me somewhere in there?

Tom Emmer

will be her successor. Read the story in MinnPost about his new not-campaign ads - he has her ethics as well as her politics. Not quite as colorful though - lower entertainment value.

Bachmann

Well, I wouldn't agree with her view - but considering what's happening on the planet....

World Action Now on Fukushima - Harvey Wasserman
Journalist, author, activist and historian Harvey Wasserman has been reporting on, and participating in, the nuclear free movement for decades. In that time, by his judgment, only one other event matches the danger to the world posed by the Cuban Missile Crisis. That event is the ongoing nuclear disaster at Fukushima. Haven't heard about it in the corporate media? That's because the deadly and dying global nuclear industry and its allies don't want you to know. That's why he has organized a petition drive to the UN advocating international expert oversight of, and participation in, management of the Fukushima crisis. http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/the-world-community-must

Yellowstone Supervolcano Alert: The Most Dangerous Volcano In America Is Roaring To Life

Right now, the ground underneath Yellowstone National Park is rising at a record rate. In fact, it is rising at the rate of about three inches per year. The reason why this is such a concern is because underneath the park sits the Yellowstone supervolcano – the largest volcano in North America. Scientists tell us that it is inevitable that it will erupt again one day, and when it does the devastation will be almost unimaginable. A full-blown eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano would dump a 10 foot deep layer of volcanic ash up to 1,000 miles away, and it would render much of the United States uninhabitable.

Alcola Stock

So are you implying that the world is going to hell in a handbasket because someone sensationalizes a couple of events? If I were you I wouldn't read too much into these stories.

Yellowstone

Quick reality check--given the choice, should one believe the US Geological Survey's Yellowstone Volcano Observatory site, or a site named "The Daily Sheeple"?

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/activity/status.php#yvo

I'm going to go with the research-based site, thanks, particularly:

"Yellowstone earthquake activity in September was at elevated levels during the above swarms but, has returned to a relatively normal background level by October 1, 2013.

"Slow subsidence of the caldera, which began in early 2010, continues. Current deformation patterns at Yellowstone remain within historical norms." [emphasis here on "historical norms"]

And Fukushima is certainly terrible and will continue to be so, no argument there. But a sign of the apocalypse?

I don't know that these disasters, current or potential, are any more a harbinger of Doom than a lunar eclipse, drought, Miley Cyrus twerking, etc. etc. You have my permission to say "I told you so" when the seven-headed beasts show up.

Don't get your hopes up

Ms Bachmann, regrettably, will not disappear as all she needs to spew her very questionable wisdom is a spotlight. It is not important to her how she is looked upon as long as the spotlight keeps on shining. With the media always looking for ratings boosting sensationalism Ms Bachmann will find every available source of light. Oh how I wish Iowa, her homeland, had kept her all to themselves. I think she fits in much better down there.

Equally strange

I understand why MinnPost readers and others on the left find Bachman's comments hard to understand. At the same time, people on the right find comments such as poster Wanda's alarms about the dire consequences of Yellowstone and Fukushima similarly odd. People on the right use religion to control behavior, those on the left invoke the environment for the same purpose. Conveniently for both, Doomsday is invariably somewhere down the road.

Comments

It looks to me like everyone understands Bachmann's comments all too well. Can you show me where they're off base in their evaluation.

As for Wanda, you will note that I called her post equally as nutty, making your post off base by claiming that "the left" support her position, as if everyone the left is some monolithic block.

You also failed to note that Wanda has not been voted into office by like minded people. Unfortunately we can't make that same claim about Michelle Bachmann.

Amen John...

thanks making my point far more politely than I would have done.

rejected Bachman and fellow Dominionist Christians

Bachman and her ilk are the biggest threat to our Democracy today. This crazed group is largely responsible for the shutdown of government and eagerly wait for some big disaster man made or otherwise as a pretense to grab the reigns of power. These fascists use Christian language but are far from Christlike. We won't be thru with her until we put down these very harmful and anti democratic Reconstructionist Christians.

regarding "Dominionists"...I bumped into this great piece:

http://thecontributor.com/contributors-columnists/christian-rights-shutd...

excerpt:

“Dominionists believe they are engaged in an epic battle against the forces of Satan. They live in a binary world of black and white. They feel they are victims, surrounded by sinister groups bent on their destruction. They have anointed themselves as agents of God who alone know God’s will. They sanctify their rage. This rage lies at the center of the ideology. It leaves them sputtering inanities about Barack Obama, his corporate-sponsored health care reform bill, his alleged mandated suicide counseling or “death panels” for seniors under the bill, his supposed secret alliance with radical Muslims, and “creeping socialism.” They see the government bureaucracy as being controlled by “secular humanists” who want to destroy the family and make war against the purity of their belief system. They seek total cultural and political domination.” - See more at: http://thecontributor.com/contributors-columnists/christian-rights-shutd...

Bachman has become out of touch.

She preaches her truth to her constituents. She forgets she is a representative of the people. Lets burst her bubble. She deserves to be humbled and soon before she does anymore damage.
