Last night, as I attempted an instant analysis of Pres. Obama's speech to Congress, I sent out requests to smart political observers for their reactions. As some of them reply, I'll pass them along. First one is from U of M political scientist and Congress expert Kathryn Pearson. Said she:
"Obama's speech was impressive; it outlined a bold, hopeful, and clear vision for a country in crisis, despite its lack of specifics. Obama projected both confidence and competence, reinforcing his message to the public that he 'gets it.' Despite the uncertainty of what will happen next and specifically when recovery will occur, I suspect the public response will be very positive based on Obama's demonstration of leadership and understanding of the economic crisis.
The challenge is the next step as Congress tackles the legislation necessary to fulfill the initiatives and vision outlined in the speech. It is doubtful that the congressional Republicans who sat on their hands while others were continuously on their feet will be swayed by the speech itself or its high ratings."
