    Early stroke screening: Lifesaver or money waster?

    As University of Minnesota journalism professor Gary Schwitzer pointed out on his blog Wednesday, KMSP-TV reporter (and former Schwitzer student) Jeff Baillon did a terrific job earlier this week of explaining why some early screening tests — particularly the stroke prevention screening promoted by the for-profit company LifeLine — can be money wasters rather than life savers. 

    You’ve probably received a letter in your mailbox from former Olympic skater and breast cancer survivor Peggy Fleming urging you to undergo this screening test, which costs a minimum of $139. Before you follow her recommendation (and spend your hard-earned money), I, like Schwitzer, urge you to watch Baillon’s report.
