Most journalists I know majored in one of the social sciences while in college and probably struggled getting by the one and only hard science course they needed to graduate. That may explain why there’s so little science coverage in the media these days. (I know, newsroom retrenchment is probably a better explanation.)

But beginning today, MinnPost will make its own effort to fill a small part of the big informational void when it comes to science news. We’re adding a fresh feature that will appear on the site Monday through Friday: Scientific Agenda.

Scientific Agenda will bring you news on important and interesting developments from the world of science in Minnesota and elsewhere, including the latest research and science angles on a variety of topics from current events to sports.

And it will be reported and written by journalists who know science. Much of the coverage will come from MinnPost’s science reporter, Sharon Schmickle. Sharon has won awards for her science journalism, and she has taken part in several science fellowships, including the Templeton-Cambridge Journalism Fellowship at Cambridge University in England, the Knight Science Journalism program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Latin American fellowship sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing Inc. in New York.

Scientific Agenda will also include material from other sources, including Inside Science News Service, a Washington, D.C.-based news service. Inside Science News Service is supported by the not-for-profit American Institute of Physics, a publisher of scientific journals, and Jim Dawson, a former science writer and editor at the Star Tribune, is its news editor.

So check out our first installment of Scientific Agenda. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting and informative, even if you weren’t an astrophysics major.
