Introducing Learning Curve, our new education blog

Today MinnPost is launching a new education blog, Learning Curve, by Beth Hawkins. It replaces The Next Degree, which focused solely on higher-education coverage. Learning Curve will provide daily posts on news and trends occurring at all education levels, from pre-K through college and beyond.

Our education beat has been created in partnership with The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit, nonpartisan education news outlet affiliated with the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media, Columbia University.

Hawkins is a familiar writer to MinnPost readers; she has been contributing stories and posts since MinnPost's founding in 2007 — frequently on education, but also on the justice system, public policy, politics and other subjects.

She has a particular passion for reporting on education, however. In addition to her conviction that it is one of today's most pressing issues on a policy level, she's motivated by her experience advocating for her two sons in great schools and not-so-great ones.

Hawkins has received numerous national and regional awards, including several first-place Society of Professional Journalists Page One awards for investigative reporting and feature writing. Her work has appeared in More, Mother Jones, Minnesota Monthly and many other publications.

You'll find Hawkins' first Learning Curve post here. Please send your ideas and tips to her at bhawkins [at] minnpost [dot] com.

Susan Albright is co-managing editor of MinnPost.

Inside MinnPost will be the place for MinnPost staff to talk about what's going on in our enterprise. We hope to engage in a conversation with our readers, with current and prospective members and advertisers, and others interested in our grand experiment in high-quality, not-for-profit local journalism. The blog will be coordinated by Joel Kramer, MinnPost's CEO and Editor, with frequent contributions from other staff members.
