The Metrodome was three years old when the last Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played in Minnesota in 1985.

Now, reliable sources are telling MinnPost that the Minnesota Twins and local government officials are hoping to get the "mid-summer classic" to return to downtown Minneapolis, perhaps as soon as 2014, when the new Twins ballpark will be four years old.

Team officials, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Hennepin County commissioners are expected to announce Wednesday morning that they will seek to win the 2014 All-Star Game when Major League Baseball decides in the next couple of years.

The local moguls will stage the announcement on the roof of the Target Center, overlooking the construction site of the still as-yet-unnamed Twins ballpark.

Next year's game is set for St. Louis's new Busch Stadium. The 2010 game will be in the Angels' Stadium in Anaheim. The games alternate between American and National League cities, with the AL towns getting even numbered games.

While it's never been officially announced, it's been widely reported that the 2011 game will be in Phoenix, the 2012 game will be played in Kansas City and the 2013 game is set for the New York Mets' new Citi Field.

A MinnPost source said the Twins and local officials are assuming the 2014 All-Star Game is their best shot for now.
