Bachmann wants you in D.C. for 'Super Bowl of Freedom'

Rep. Michele Bachmann, D-Minn., appeared on Fox News asking people from across America to join her at the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington Thursday at noon to make a "house call" before Congress votes on health-care reform.

Bachmann wants to rally all "freedom loving Americans" to go into the congressional office buildings, look into the whites of their representatives' eyes and tell them they have to vote no on the reform.

"This is the Super Bowl of Freedom this week. Socialized medicine is the crown jewel of socialism. This will change our country forever," Bachmann said.

    Why we like horror movies

University of Minnesota Associate Professor of Art History Robert Silberman explains why people pay big money to be scared. Silberman compares horror movies to a roller coaster at an amusement park. It allows us to experience the fear in a controlled situation, making it enjoyable instead of frightening. Horror films also contain a sexual element that draws in teenage audiences trying to understand their own sexuality. Take the current "Twilight" movie series about vampires, for example.

Whether it involves aliens, snakes or death, Silberman says a dark theater is the perfect place for people to experience their own dark fears without the fear of getting hurt.

Profile of a famous polar explorer against global warming

With 40,000 miles traveled and counting, Will Steger has led expeditions by dogsled, kayak and on foot in some of the most inhospitable places on the planet in the Artic and Antarctic regions. Over the past 40 years, Steger said he has seen firsthand the effects of global warming on the poles. He now leads groups of students who want to preserve the icey wilderness from warming as much as he does.

Bob Dotson of NBC's "Today Show" visits the Steger homestead in Ely, Minn., to profile this traveler turned teacher.

Documenting death with historical traditions and objects

With thoughts of ghosts and the undead floating around during Halloween time, it is hard not to be reminded of our own mortality.

Matt Anderson, objects curator with the Minnesota Historical Society, displays a selection of the many death-related items in the society's collection. These objects and photos provide an insight on people's changing views and traditions surrounding death.

Once a private household family affair, funerals today usually happen as open ceremonies in funeral homes and places of worship. And the common undertaker, who once provided portable embalming services, has evolved into the expansive role and more friendly title of funeral director.
