The technology was the same when I started at the Tribune in 1969. We writers and editors passed our words along on sheets of paper to the typesetters and compositors who transformed them into metal type and arranged them, with engravings of photos and drawings, into the pages of the newspaper as sketched by editors and ad-layout folks. This film I'm pretty sure must include a glimpse of Ed Neill, news editor of the Star, whose daughter, Noel Neill, veered away from a journalism career and went into acting and played Lois Lane in most of the 1950s "Adventures of Superman" TV series. (She's now 88 and still going.)

All those skills, on through the pressroom, bundlers in the mailroom, delivery drivers and carriers, interlocked and interacted to bring the newspaper to subscribers' doorsteps. It was thrilling to be a part of it all. Seems that it was awfully suddenly, beginning in the mid-1970s, that computers began supplanting certain skilled humans in this process. Technology evolved quickly, but I never would have believed the industry would reach the point it's at now. Anyhow, to reassure you right-wingers -- as of the time I retired, we were still getting our marching orders from Moscow.
