    John Beargrease: the most famous mailman of the North Shore

    Along the North Shore of Lake Superier, racers gathered last weekend to commemorate the work of John Beargrease, the son of a Chippewa chief. Beargrease delivered mail by dog sled in the late 19th century. Launched in 1981, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is the longest and most challenging of sled-dog events in the lower 48 states. It's even a qualifiying race for the Iditarod in Alaska. The dogs at the starting line of this year's race can't wait to get running.
