    Lao community kicks-off new year celebration this week

    The Lao new year celebration lasts for three days, from April 13 to April 15, consisting of different activities for each day. Minnesota's Lao community started the new year festivities Saturday with Thok bot at the Crystal Community Center. During the new year celebraton Lao people will often free live animals such as birds or fish, visit friends, and offer gifts of food. Water also plays a huge part in the celebration. Everything from animals to Buddha images to people are washed and sometimes drenched by buckets of perfumed water to clean away the bad and gain good health in the new year.
