The MinnPost Asks event series features newsmaker interviews by MinnPost journalists in an informal setting with audience interaction. Series sponsors for 2011 are Dorsey & Whitney and Padilla Speer Beardsley. We appreciate their generous support.
The 2011 series began in February and wrapped up in October. Five interviews took place at Hell's Kitchen in downtown Minneapolis. And a day of programs took place at the State Fair.
All programs were lively and well-attended, with participants ranging in age from college students to 80-plus. We offer a brief recap, and video highlights.
On Monday, Feb. 28, Doug Grow interviewed House Majority Leader Matt Dean and House Minority Leader Paul Thissen before an engaged and lively crowd at Hell's Kitchen. Rep. Dean was a last-minute substitute for House Speaker Kurt Zellers who was ill.
On Monday, May 16, Jay Weiner interviewed Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission Chair Ted Mondale, with anti-stadium protesters on the sidewalk outside and diverse opinions and questioners inside. MinnPost's Joe Kimball filed a report.
On Monday, June 20, arts and culture blogger Max Sparber moderated a panel discussion with Joe Dowling of the Guthrie Theater, Kaywin Feldman of the Mpls Institute of Arts, and James Sewell of James Sewell Ballet. The topic: What kind of future do the arts have in MN?
On Saturday, Sept. 3, as part of the third annual MinnPost Day at the State Fair, we programmed a series of "Asks" events. Learning Curve writer Beth Hawkins interviewed Steven Rosenstone, new chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Washington Correspondent Devin Henry interviewed 5th District Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison. CEO/Editor Joel Kramer moderated a panel on "The Future of the News" with panelists MinnPost media writer David Brauer and Nora Paul, director of the Minnesota Journalism Center at the University of Minnesota. And Joe Kimball moderated a panel of diverse and articulate young people.
On Monday, Oct. 3, education reporter Beth Hawkins interviewed Eric Kaler, new president of the University of Minnesota.
On Monday, Oct. 24, Cityscape founder Steve Berg interviewed Susan Haigh, Metropolitan Council Chair, and Michael Langley, CEO of the new organization Greater MSP. The topic was “Twin Cities 2041 -- What Lies Ahead?” Envision Minnesota co-sponsored this event.
