I went to school in upstate New York, where the prevailing theory was that nothing actually existed west of, say, Ohio and that “people from Minnesota” were in reality part of a covert operation to force Eastern schoolchildren to learn pointless geography. Later I met several Minnesotans in the U.S. Foreign Service and overseas; our idea was that Minnesotans either joined the Foreign Service or the Foreign Legion in order to escape ice dams and such.

Received a email from a tour guide I met in Istanbul Turkey last October.
He wanted to know if I was ok in January, with all the snow he saw on an international weather report about MN.
Yesterday I received another email and he wondered if winter is over in MN?
I don’t have the heart to tell him that it snowed last May.
    Reminds me of a joke.
Tourist in MN: What do you all do around here in the summer?
Minnesotan: Well, if it fall on a Sunday we usually have a picnic!
