‘Intermodal’ transit station pondered for downtown Minneapolis
By Joe Kimball | 11/20/08
Officials from Minneapolis and Hennepin County -- along with property owners, neighborhood organizations and businesses -- are talking this week about building an "intermodal station" in downtown Minneapolis, which would handle light rail, buses and taxis.
The discussions will culminate with a Friday meeting in the Hennepin County boardroom at 1 p.m. That’s when the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority -- the Board of Commissioners in disguise -- gets a briefing on a concept plan, which will include ideas about where the station might be located and how it might function.

The new Twins ballpark construction project is already implementing most of this. The LRT tracks have been extended to the ballpark; the North Star commuter rail will also terminate at the ballpark; there are parking ramps and a 394 entrance ramp right next to the park; the Cedar Lake commuter bike trail will run right past the ballpark. All of this transportation development should result in a huge amount of retail and housing development in the same area.
