Not everyone’s pleased with Duluth’s latest fundraising idea: selling lakeshore lots
Duluth's City Council has a great fundraising idea: sell lakeshore lots.
The sale of three "virgin lots" on Park Point was approved last night on a 6-3 vote, reports the Duluth News Tribune.
The action raises a total of $1.23 million, but the sale of the forested dunes didn't go over well with some residents, including birders.
“Selling park land sends a strong negative message that the city of Duluth cannot be trusted to be a good steward,” said Green, an author and former board member of the National Audubon Society.
Could there be more sales? “We shouldn’t limit our options right now,” said Council Member Todd Fedora, who warned the city might face even greater financial challenges in 2009.
Lisa Potswald, the city’s chief administrative officer, agreed: “We may need every cent that’s available to get through next year.”

The late Representative Willard Munger, "Mr.
Environment", would turn over in his grave if he heard this was happening in his hometown.
Especially if the Park Point land was in the public domain.
One of his last legislative actions was a very strong attempt to protect tax-forfeited shoreland on rivers and lakes from being sold to private parties. His bill didn't become law, but he was certain it was the right thing to do so people of all income levels could enjoy using water bodies and their adjacent shoreland.
