GOP lawyers group denies any improper role in Coleman recount battle
The Republican National Lawyers Association, in a statement today, denied that it has done anything untoward in raising money to block Al Franken from becoming Minnesota's next senator.
On Monday, the DFL announced it was filing a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission against both Sen. Norm Coleman and the RNLA for being in violation of fundraising laws. Using an RNLA solicitation letter as evidence, the DFL alleged that Coleman's recount committee was receiving improper funds from the RNLA.
But today, the RNLA said it hasn't raised any money for Coleman.
"RNLA is not and has not been involved in litigation in the Coleman-Franken race. … RNLA has not communicated with the Coleman campaign, has not spent any funds on the Coleman campaign or post-election effort and categorically rejects the claims of the DFL's FEC complaint.''
The RNLA solicitation letter asked for contributions by using such headlines as "Stop Al Franken From Stealing the Election.''
But the funds raised are actually used "to educate the press and the public as to the numerous issues of voter disenfranchisement'' in the Minnesota race and other contests, the group said.
