Legislators considering bill to keep sex offenders off Facebook, MySpace
By Joe Kimball | 02/11/09
A bill in the Legislature would forbid registered sex offenders from using Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites. It also would keep them from using instant messaging and chat sites, according to the House Public Information Services office.
The House sponsor, Rep. Karla Bigham, DFL-Cottage Grove, says: "When you are a registered sex offender you are subject to unannounced searches of your person, house and car. We are going to extend that to the computer, PDAs, and such."
Similar legislation died in conference committee last year. A similar bill is sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Mee Moua, DFL-St. Paul.
