Franken supporters using corny message to put pressure on Pawlenty to certify election

The oral arguments in the Franken-Coleman recount appeal before the Minnesota Supreme Court don't start until Monday, but a group supporting Al Franken has a stunt planned for today to urge Gov. Tim Pawlenty to certify the election when the appeal is finished.

This time, members of Americans United for Change are using corn.

The group has been running a "Seat Our Senator" campaign for weeks, with a billboard on I-94 in St. Paul and a television commercial. They're trying to put public pressure on Pawlenty to certify the election and seat the appeal winner -- presumably Franken -- rather than waiting for a possible further appeal in the federal courts.

Today at 2 p.m. at the Capitol, a man dressed as an ear of corn will deliver a basket of Iowa corn to the governor's office.

The slightly contorted message: The governor should put the interest of Minnesotans (who want a second U.S. senator ASAP) over his own national ambitions, which some believe will involve running for president in 2012. The first step in the presidential campaign involves the Iowa caucuses -- thus the corn.

It sounds like someone had a corn costume that was gathering dust in the closet. There are a couple of giant inflatable rats available for rent in the Twin Cities---they would be a much more appropraite prop for future interactions with the governor.
