Former legislator Bill Haas is first Republican officially in governor's race

And the first Republican to actually jump feet first into the gubernatorial pool after Gov. Tim Pawlenty's announcement that he won't seek a third term is ...

The envelope please -- and an old legislative manual ...

It's Bill Haas. He's a former mayor of Champlin and served as a state representative from 1994 to 2004. He now owns an employee benefits company and is a part-time lobbyist for the White Earth Tribal Nation, helping with economic development projects.

He opposes tax increases and promises to run a positive campaign.
