Ely vying to be 'Coolest Small Town' in travel magazine contest

Ely is second in balloting in Budget Travel's online contest to determine the "Coolest Small Town."

Last week, the city was in first place, said the Ely Echo, but this morning's tally in the magazine shows Brevard, N.C., has jumped ahead. Egg Harbor, Wis., is third.

The magazine poll nominated 21 cities around the country in its quest to find the Coolest Small Town. They define that as: "a town of under 10,000 residents that's beginning to draw attention — and new residents — because of the quality of life, arts, and restaurant scene, or proximity to nature. We want towns with an edge, so think avant-garde galleries, not country stores."

You can vote for more than one small town in the poll.

So, towns that cater to a wealthy, metro, weekend cottage set at the expense of real jobs, goods, and services for locals?

Yeah. Been there, done that. It's all fun and games until the school district implodes.
