It never hurts to think about warm summery days and cheese curds on a blustery January day, so I was happy to see a report from the State Fair on work planned for the coming year.

The fair board authorized more than $6 million in improvements and maintenance projects at its annual meeting last weekend. They include construction of a new restroom on the north end of the fairgrounds, a new Education Building roof, window replacement in the historic Cattle Barn, significant infrastructure work and hundreds of painting, maintenance and landscape jobs.

Fair officials like to remind us that the fair is self-supporting and gets now government aid.

The fair runs this year from Aug. 25 to Sept. 5.
