Dayton to tour Stillwater flooding as Lift Bridge closes

Gov. Mark Dayton heads to Stillwater this afternoon to view the rising St. Croix River.

The river has already pushed over its banks in downtown Stillwater, and the Lift Bridge connecting Wisconsin and Minnesota was closed just after 9 a.m.

Dayton came out last month in support of a proposed new bridge, just south of Stillwater, that would connect to Hwy. 36 in Oak Park Heights. That's the controversial bridge that was canceled because of environmental concerns. But Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is pushing to get it built anyway, for safety and development reasons.

The need to close the Lift Bridge during floods can only support, it seems, the pro-new bridge argument.

Dayton will tour the Stillwater riverfront at 3:30 p.m. with Mayor Ken Harycki.
