Superintendent urges St. Paul parents to protest proposed state cuts
St. Paul Superintendent Valeria Silva has sent a letter to district parents, posted online by MPR, that urges them to contact the governor and legislators about proposed state budget cuts that would gut integration programs and freeze special education funds.
"The proposed budget cuts will hurt education in Saint Paul. If you are concerned about the risks to your child's school, you can make your voice heard," she said.
The cuts have been pushed by the Republican majority in the Legislature. Gov. Mark Dayton and all the St. Paul legislators are DFLers and have opposed such heavy cuts.
Silva said $28 million in proposed cuts to integration aid to St. Paul schools over two years would eliminate school choice in St. Paul.
She notes that proposed K-12 education cuts hit hardest the public schools in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth.
