Duluth City Council approves new ski chalet and lift
Hoping to attract even more skiers and tourists to Duluth's city-owned Spirit Mountain ski area, the City Council has approved the building of a ski chalet and ski lift.
The council authorized the issuance of $6.975 million in bonds that would be backed by the city but paid off with the city's tourism tax and operating revenue from the project, said the Duluth News Tribune.
This new chalet will be at the bottom of the ski hill, and will be open year 'round. There's already a main chalet at the top of the ski run. And the new lift will replace a 28-year-old one. During the non-ski season, it will carry hikers and bicyclists up the hill.
Officials said the improvements should be ready by next ski season and will add 10 to 12 new jobs and spur development in West Duluth.
