The Legislature, which kicks off its session today, hasn't adjourned by April since 1998. But many are hoping that they can get an early release this year, says Don Davis in the Fargo Forum.
Following last session's shutdown, many legislators think it's a good idea to get their business done early and then leave St. Paul.
And there's the specter of redistricting hanging over their heads; when the new district maps are approved in February, many legislators will be anxious to get back home and check out their new constituents.
Quotes from the story:
“I’m sure people will want to reach out to their new districts and understand their specific concerns,” Sen. John Howe, R-Red Wing, said.
“The last couple months of the session will be going on after people see the new districts and what they’re going to look like,” Rep. Denny McNamara, R-Hastings, said. “It will be in the back of people’s minds ... if you’re running for re-election.”
The story says:
Republicans, especially, want a short session.
“A majority of us think that is the way it should work,” Sen. Joe Gimse, R-Willmar, said.

There's a quick way to shorten the session: skip all the noxious constitutional amendments. Though I suppose as long as the goal is to take away the rights of people who tend not to vote Republican, our Republicans could do what Republicans do in other states, and just skip the standard procedures. Shove it through so the opposition can't debate.
I pity the poor Governor who has to work with the Koch brothers addled Minnesota Legislature.
